Gaila Adair
I graduated with a Fine Art Degree BA Hons from Cheltenham Art College in 1982 and have designed and constructed gardens and landscapes with my partner since 1989, firstly learning my plants in a Nursery. In 2009 I graduated with an MSc from the University of Bath in The Conservation of Historic Gardens and Cultural Landscapes and have designed and consulted on the gardens of Listed Buildings, one of which is Watlington House in Reading of which I am a Trustee.
Over the years I have carried on painting behind the scenes and there has been a natural progression where the painting is now central to my life and I now exhibit at Galleries, and the West Berkshire and North Hampshire Open Studios. I am a member of a rowing club and love to single scull on the Thames. In 2024 I held a solo exhibition of over 20 paintings, called ‘Rowing through the Landscape’ at the River and Rowing Museum Henley.
The British Landscape in all its guises is my passion, I live and work in its midst and am constantly inspired by its beauty. I love to paint in oils and once I start making a few marks on the canvas, the images take on a life of their own with accentuated colour, bold palette knife marks or more sensitive brush strokes, depending on the subject.
